Taking Measurements

Use a tape measure to determine the correct dimensions.

Bust measurements are taken at the fullest part of the bust.
Waist measurements are taken at the narrowest part of the abdomen, above the navel.
Hip measurements are taken at the widest part of the body, at the lower level of the buttocks – not at the hip bones.

Which measurement is most important varies by pattern. For example, the hip measurement would be the most important measurement for casual pants and skirts that feature an elastic waistband. In such garments, the elastic can be cut to your preferred dimension, but the hips must fit. Another example would be shirts and dresses. Here the bust measurement is important. If you wish for more room at the waist or hips, those areas could be graded outward.

Alterations

To alter a pattern to provide more room at the waist or hips, cut your pattern at the bust measurement and grade outward, down to the lower hem. The diagram below illustrates this concept with a dotted line. The red line is the correct size for the bust, and the green line is the desired width for the waist.

Dresses are altered with the same technique. In the digram below, the wearer wishes to use the size in red for their bust and waist measurements. They wish to have a size two sizes larger for their hip measurements, and grade out this area of the pattern to the green line. The wearer’s adjustments are depicted by the black line.

A final example of customizing your projects is altering arms. In the digram below, the pattern size is shown in purple. The wearer wishes to lengthen and tighten the arms, and their adjustment is shown in black. In this case it is important to leave the shoulder of the arm unaltered, so the arm still fits perfectly within the front and back of the shirt or dress.
